a government in which the people rule

Federalism

a system of government in which power is divided between a central government and smaller political units, such as states

Separation of Powers

a principle that divides basic government roles into branches

Checks and Balances

a principle that says that each branch of government can exercise controls over the other branches

Limited Government

a principle that says that in American government, everyone, citizens or powerful leaders, must obey the law

Individual Rights

a principle that guarantees personal liberties and privileges
