Thermal Bridging | Rapid heat conduction resulting from direct contact between very thermally conductive materials like metal and glass |
R-Value | The measure of resistance to heat flow. |
U-value | A measure of thermal transmittance through a material. |
Thermal Conductivity | the ability of an object to transfer heat |
Thermal Mass | materials which absorb sunlight and store it as heat energy, such as brick, stone, concrete, or water |
british thermal unit | a unit of heat equal to the amount of heat required to raise one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit at one atmosphere pressure |
Dehumidifier | a small appliance that removes excess moisture from the air. |
S.E.E.R. | Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio |
Thermostat | a regulator for automatically regulating temperature by starting or stopping the supply of heat |
Ductwork | the method by which air is channeled from the furnace or the blower coil throughout your home. |
supply | vent used to distribute heated or cooled air to a room / space |
return | Vent used to circulate the air back to the HVAC unit |
conduction | the direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that it is touching |
convection | the transfer of heat through a fluid (liquid or gas) caused by molecular motion |
combustion | the process of burning |
cubic feet per minute | A rating that expresses the amount of air a blower or fan can move. The volume of air (measured in cubic feet) that can pass through an opening in one minute. |
forced air | systems fuel heats air, which is blown through ducts and vents; cool air is returned to the furnance to be reheated |
filter | device that removes something from whatever passes through it |
hydronic | An ambiguous term meaning either hot-water space heating or both hot water and steam space heating |
geo thermal | is heat energy produced by natural processes inside the earth such as hot springs or hot water under the ground. Used to make steam to turn generator turbines and make electricity. |
