Amyntas I of Macedonia King of Macedon (his son was Alexander I). Surrendered himself to and sided with the Persian powers...Darius that is.
Aristagoras Of Miletus. Laid down (his) tyranny and declared isonomia (equality of law). This carried a domino effect for revolts in Ionia, Caria, and most of Cyprus. Ionians burn Sardis w/ support of Athens and Eretria. --> Battle of Lade in 494...this is pretty much the end of Ionia as a substantial player in this game.
Battle of Marathon Took place in 490. Athenian army of about 10000, with 10 Athenian generals; Militiades was the hero of Marathon -- he persuades the others to attack the Persians instead of waiting to be attacked, which led to victory. 6400 dead Persians, 192 dead Athenians (100:3 = slightly suspicious). Shield signal.
DatisExpedition of this guy and Artaphernes in 490. Inter-polis conflict: Medizing argos vs. sparta and aegina vs. athens. Phoenician navy and Iranian army advances. Persian success in island conquests. Eretria razed in the revenge of the burning of Kybele's temple. Then was led by Hippias, exiled tyrant, Persians land at Marathon.
Hellenic League Met in 481 at the Hellenium in Sparta. Supreme command at sea and land given to Sparta. Mutual aid from all to all(ish). Council of War really. Oath: when they won, land of Medizers was to be confiscated and 1/10 of such dedicated to Apollo.
Hellespontine Bridges Greek architect Harpalus responsible. Xerxes turns water into land (and land into water w/ previously built canal) as a kind of eastern dominance symbol. Bridges remarkably sturdy. Half-way across, Xerxes lashes the waters of the Hellespont as punishment.
Oath of Plataea Oath: to obey their officers; to fight to the death and not desert; to annihilate Medizers; to leave in ruins, as a memorial, the temples destroyed by the Persians. Several of these really shouldn't have had to have been sworn...
Pausanias (King of Sparta) Victor at the battle of Plataea. Destroyed the army of the Medes and dedicated the Serpent Column (in his honor) to Phoebus.
Pre-Parthenon Commemoration of Marathon. Started to build a "pre-parthenon," but it was never completed due to the second Persian invasion -- kind of a thanks offering to Athena really. Stoa Poikile set up in the agora...actually set up alongside the capture of Troy.
Secondary State Formation There was the expedition of Mardonius (Persian general) in 492. In Thrace, secondary state formation took place (something to do with nearby regions accepting Macedonian rule).
Serpent Column 3 serpents entwined -- on each curl was engraved a city which fought in the war. Dedicated to Pausanias...who dedicated this monument to Phoebus when he destroyed the army of the Medes.
Settlement of Artaphernes Co-opted Ionian League: cities to settle disputes by arbitration...not war.
Settlement of Mardonius All tyrants deposed of. Democracies established.
Themistocles Convinces the powers that be in Athens to use the silver (from the silver strike in Laurium) to build a fleet of warships, and not to distribute it amongst the demos. Also naval leader in Battle of Salamis where he really does Xerxes a number after drawing the Persian fleet into a trap.
Treasury of the Athenians at Delphi The Athenians placed a temple at Delphi -- built of marble -- a treasury to Apollo in honor of the battle (Marathon) --> Defeating barbarian enemies emphasized as a theme.
499-493: Ionian Revolt
494: Battle of Lade
492-490: First Persian War
490: Battle of Marathon
480-479: Invasion of Xerxes (Second Persian War)
480: Battle of Thermopylae, then Battle of Salamis
479: Battle of Plataea
