Definitions

epithelial tissue membranous tissue covering internal organs and other internal surfaces of the body
epithelium cells covering external and internal surfaces of the body
polarity having an indicated pole (as the distinction between positive and negative electric charges)
avascular without blood vessels
glandular epithelium composed of cells that are specialized to produce and secrete substances into ducts or into body fluids
exocrine denoting a gland that secretes outwardly through ducts
endocrine made up of glands that produce and release chemicals into the bloodstream in order to maintain homeostasis
stereocilia nonmotile cilia, in hair cells, bend in response to the transmission of sound waves
ciliated epithelium this tissue is found in the uterine tube
cell adhesion molecules proteins that guide cellular movement within the body
intercellular cement a thin layer of proteoglycans that contain polysaccharide derivatives know as glycosaminoglycans
cell junctions (all three)Tight junctions seal adjacent epithelial cells in a narrow band just beneath their apical surface.
Adherens junctions provide strong mechanical attachments between adjacent cells.
Gap junctions are intercellular channels some 1.5-2 nm in diameter. These permit the free passage between the cells of ions and small molecules (up to a molecular weight of about 1000 daltons).
basal lamina supporting layer of connective tissue under the epithelium
reticular lamina A layer of extracellular material containing a fine network of collagen protein fibers
germinative cells stem cells located near the basal lamina responsible for maintaining epithilial structure
simple epithelium A single layer of thin, flat cells. It is often found where diffusion or filtration take place (alveoli in lungs, kidneys). It also covers organs in the pericardial, pleural, and peritoneal cavities.
stratified epithelium thick membrane with several cell layers, surface cells can contain keratin. protects underlying tissues in areas that can be rubbed or injured
squamous epithelium Flat, scale-like cells composing the epidermis
simple squamous epithelium contains a single layer of flat cells; found in the body where filtration (kidney) or diffusion (lungs) are priority processes
mesothelium epithelium originating in the embryonic mesoderm
endothelium an epithelium of mesoblastic origin
stratified squamous epithelium thick membrane with several cell layers, surface cells can contain keratin. protects underlying tissues in areas that can be rubbed or injured
cubodial epithelium Square cells with nucllei that are round and situated in the middle of the cell
simple cubodial epithelium single layer of cubelike cells with large, spherical central nuclei. location -kidney tubules, ducts..
stratified cubodial epithelium multilayered cube shaped epithelial, not commonly found in the human body, found in large ducts of major salivary glands
