| bibliography | an alphabetized list of books or articles used in the writing of a document; a list of further research |
| index | an alphabetical list of topics/subjects that can be found in the book |
| Dewey Decimal System | system created by Melvil Dewey which arranges nonfiction books according to ten major subject divisions |
| fiction | story which is not real |
| nonfiction | story which is true; contains factual information |
| research | to investigate a topic thoroughly using a variety of materials |
| vertical file | a collection of small items too small to be placed on the library shelves. These may include pamphlets, newspaper clippings, pictures, and posters |

| dictionary | a book that lists most words in a language and that gives the pronunciation and meaning of the words |
| encyclopedia | a book or set of books containing information arranged in alphabetical order according to subjects, and covering a wide range of knowledge |
| thesaurus | a book that lists synonyms for words arranged by categories |
| library catalog | an alphabetical arrangement of information about the materials in the library; done by subject, title, and author |
| author card | catalog "card" which is alphabetized by the author's last name |
