attempt to keep an open mind toward cultural variations

subculture

groups that share values, norms, and behaviors not shared by the entire populations; ex. Chinatown

counterculture

groups that reject major values, norms, and practices of the larger society and replaces them with a new set of cultural patterns; ex. cyberpunk, anarchists, organized crime, hippies
