Native american religion believed in only one great spirit, but they also believed in many lesser spirits-like the spirits of the four winds.
Native americans gave thanks to spirits whenever they took anything from the earth.
For example, when they killed a deer for food, they sent a prayer of thanks to the spirit of the deer.
They wasted no part of any animal
Wastefulness was considered a crime and was disrespectful to the Creator.
However, not all spirits were good and helpful.
Some spirits were evil demons.
The worst two to native americans in our area were called Hobbomock, whos name means 'he is bad' and Mishsquantum or Squantum, whos name is sometimes mispronounced as Squanto, which means blood minded or angry one.
