Culture The way of life of a people, their beliefs, customs and practices.
Cultural Landscape the parts of a people's environment that they have shaped and the technology they have used to shape it.
Civilizations Advanced cultures with cities and the use of writing.
Institutions Customs and organizations with social, educational or religious purposes. Examples: extended family, council of elders.
How are culture and environment related? Environment can change culture, for instance, if the land is by the sea the people might eat a lot of fish. the people might find a way to use the environment for their survival, farming for instance. People can also have an effect on their environment, using technology to change it.
What were four major advancements in technology of early cultures? Tools, Control of fire, Agriculture and development of civilizations
What is the Agricultural Revolution? the change from being hunter gatherers to learning how to farm,grow crops, tame wild animals to help work or raise for food.
What cultural advances followed the agricultural revolution? Farmers grew more food than they needed so they could trad for goods.Development of laws and government. Writing, irrigation, power driven machinery.
Society a group of people sharing a culture.
Social Structure A pattern of relationships among groups of people in the society
Social Class A grouping of people based on rank or status. Wealth, land,ancestors, or education.
Nuclear Family mother, father, children
Extended Family family that includes several generations
What is the basic social unit of societies? Family
What is the relationship between language and culture? All cultures have language.People learn culture through language. Communication depends on language. Language reflects what's important in that culture.
Why is religion important to people? Can help people make sense of the world. Can provide hope and comfort for people facing difficult times. Help answer meaning of life, ethical questions, standards of behavior.
What is the role of social structure in society? Small groups within society allow people to work together to benefit all. Getting food, protecting people, raising children.
What is the place of families in a social structure? Families teach customs, traditions. Children learn dress, manners, eat, play.
What values do all religions share? Treat others well, prayers and rituals, celebrate important places and times.
Cultural Diffusion the movement of ideas and customs
Acculturation The process of accepting new ideas into a culture.
What are three factors that change culture? Changes in environment, technology, ideas.
What is the Industrial Revolution? Late 1800's early 1900', grwoth of industry and spread of factories. People moved to cities to work at factories.
How did the invention of the car affect industry? People could move to suburbs and drive to work. Led to people buying homes and having yards, develpment of suburbs.
How has technology affected the rate of cultural change? Communicatin technology(phone, email, TV, Radio) sends new ideas and information all over the world much more quickly.
