Furrow (wrinkle) | - a linear crevice in the skin accompanied by bordering elevations- a wrinkle - they appear as fine tracings in the skin which are barely visible |
Sulcus | - furrow, wrinkle, or groove- depression or indentation - opposite of an eminence - an "inny" |
Sulci | more than 1 Sulcus |
Groove | an elongated depression on a surface plane |
Fold | - an elongated prominence of flesh - abuts convexly against an adjacent surface - a belly of sagging tissue between 2 furrows |
Dimples (Natural) | - shallow depressions found in soft tissues of cheeks/chin- may have 2 forms: round or vertical - when on chin is always visible - when on cheeks; visible when smiling |
Oblique Palpebral Sulcus (Natural) | - shallow curving groove originating below the inner canthus of eye- darkened groove it moves oblique downward & lateral in direction |
Nasal Sulcus (Natural) | - small angular area formed by posterior margin of nasal wing- superior end of the Naso Labial Fold |
Naso Labial Fold (Natural) | - prominence of anterior part of cheek- runs from the superior margin of nasal wing to the side of mouth - usually disappears at the line of lip |
Angulus Oris Eminence (Natural) | - small convex prominence with begins on upper integumentary lip- begins medially/superiorly to line of lip closure - moves obliquely downward and disappears - had no definite borders - its presence is essential to proper mouth expression |
Submental Sulcus (Natural) | - lies at the junction of base of chin & submandibular area- may develop into an acquired furrow |
Philtrum (Natural) | - vertical groove on central plane of upper lip- very shallow - resembles a parenthesis - may be obscured by old age |
Angulus Oris Sulcus (Natural) | - small triangular shaped depression immediately adjacent to the line of lip closure- recedes into the depth of the line of lip closure |
Labiomental Sulcus (Natural) | - formed by junction of lower lip/chin- linear form is an arc - acquired furrow may develop at the same location |
Superior Palpebral Sulcus (Acquired) | - furrow of upper attached margin of closed upper eye lid- may be continuous or only partially present |
Bucco-Facial Sulcus (Acquired) | - vertical, slightly curved furrow in soft tissues of cheek- usually originates above line of lip closure - may extend slightly below line of lip closure |
Labial Sulci (Acquired) | - fine vertical furrows which cross the mucous membrane (lips)- part of integumentary lip - furrows of age |
Platysmal Sulci (Acquired) | - double chin- greatly dipping furrows of neck - appear across neck - often extend upward - vary in length |
Cords of the Neck (Acquired) | - may be single & convex- "turkey wattle" - may be in pairs with concavity in middle - when in pairs will be associated with digastricus muscle - folds of skin are always vertical in direction - may appear as vertical convex ridges - found only on older persons |
Transverse Frontal Sulci (Acquired) | - furrows across the forehead- may appear as fine tracings - may mimic form of eye brows - often vary in direction & spacing (not uniform) - medial curvature may dip or arc |
Nasolabial Sulcus (Acquired) | - furrow which may develop along medial margin of nasolabial fold- originates from superior margin of nasal wing |
Inferior Palpebral Sulcus (Acquired) | - furrow of lower attached border of open or closed lower eye lid- short than the superior palpebral |
Optic Facial Sulci (Acquired) | - Crow's feet- radiate from the lateral end of the eye - may appear straight or curved |
Mandibular Sulci (Acquired) | - originates below jaw line- extends upward on each check - lateral to nasolabial fold |
Interciliary Sulci (Acquired) | - vertical or horizontal markings between eyebrows- transverse form often indicates concentration - vertical form often indicates frowning |
Eminence | - a prominence, projection, protrusionbump or bulge - opposite of a sulcus - an "outy" |
