Self-fulfillment A commitment to the full development of one's personality, talents, and potential. (A new american value.)
Narcissism Extreme self-centeredness.
Internalization The process by which a norm becomes a part of an individual's personality, thus conditioning that individual to conform to society's expectations.
Sanction Rewards or punishments uswed to enforce conformity to norms.
positive sanction An action that rewards a particular kind of behavior.
negative sanction An action that is used to discourage an undesired behavior.
formal sanction A reward or punishment given by a formal organization, such as a school, business or government.
informal sanction A spontaneous expression of approval or disapproval given by an individual or group.
social control The enforcing of norms through either internal(self control) or external(police, courts, religion, family) means.
ideology A system of beliefs or ideas that justify the social, moral, religious, political or economic interests held by a group or by society.
social movement A long-term conscious effort to promote or prevent social change.
technology The knowlegde and tools people use to manipulate their environment.
diffusion The process of spreading culture traits from one society to another.
reformulation The process of adapting borrowed culture traits.
cultural lag The situation in which some aspects of the culture change less rapidly (or lag behind) others. (Ex: material culture is much faster than nonmaterial.)
