1.
2 broad categories for cells: wether they have a nucleus or not
(eukaryote and prokaryote)
2.
cell characteristics: all contain DNA at some point.
surrounded by barrier called cell membrane.
3.
cell membrane: outer layer of cell, picks what goes in an out of the cell. NOT in plant cell.
4.
cell theory: all living things are composed of cells.
5.
cell wall: protects and supports cell.
6.
chloroplasts: traps suns energy and makes food, found in plant cells
7.
chromatin: DNA bound to protein
8.
chromosome: condensed chromatin
9.
cilia: short hairs
10.
concentration of a solution: mass of solute in a given column of solution
11.
cytoplasm: substance that fills cells, organelles move in it.
12.
cytoskeleton: supports structure of cell
13.
diffusion: process of molecules moving from a high concentration to low concentration
14.
eukaryote: CONTAINS NUCLEUS. ex. plant cell
15.
flagella: long whip tail
16.
golgi bodies: packages and processes proteins before shipping to final destination (in cytoplasm)
17.
hypertonic: solution with greater concentration of solutes.
water always moves to hypertonic solution.
18.
hypotonic: solution w/ lesser concentration of solutes. (less molecules)
19.
isotonic: concentrations of 2 solutions are the SAME.
20.
lysosomes: clean up crew organelle, removes debris and breaks them down
21.
mitochondria: power house, release energy from floods
22.
nuclear envelope: protects nucleus. lets things go in and out of nucleus.
(around nucleus)
23.
nucleolus: makes ribosomes (inside nucleus)
24.
nucleus: control center, contains DNA.
25.
organelles: little organs
26.
osmosis: diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane
27.
passive transport: substances moving across the cell membrane WITHOUT requiring energy.
28.
prokaryote: NO NUCLEUS! ex. bacteria
29.
ribosomes: make and assembles proteins.
(in cytoplasms or attached to rough E.R)
30.
rough E.R.: modifies proteins then shipped to golgi apparatus
31.
smooth E.R.: contains enzymes that perform specialized tasks
32.
vacuole: storage unit, stores water and food
