| programming languages | these are used to make programming easier, programmers don't have to remember all of the bite and byte information |
| computer program | a set of instructions that tells the computer how to perform a specific task |
| install | copying the program or instructions that are stored on a CD or website to your computer's hard drive |
| word processing | program that allows you to write letters, essays, stories, etc. |
| database | program that holds address books, mailing lists, etc. |
| spreadsheets | program with rows and cells that stores financial information, organizes information, etc. |
| operating system | the most important program on any computer. controls how the CPU communicates with other hardware components, makes the computer easier to operate |
| Disk-based Operating System (DOS) | the part of the operating system that contains other programs that are important but not essential to making the computer run |
| Graphical User Interface (GUI) | uses graphics or pictures to help the user navigate within the computer system |
| file | a collection of data that is stored together- can be stored on a hard drive, a floppy disk, or CD |
| extensions | abbreviation of a type of file, usually 3 letters, on the end of the fil name |
| .exe | extension for an executable program file |
| .jpg, .gif, .bmp | extensions for graphics, photos or image files |
| .pdf | extensions for Adobe Acrobat files |
| .htm, .html | extensions for a file to be viewed in a web browser |
| .zip | extensions for compressed files that are reduced in size |
| Find | located on the Start Menu, this is a type of search program where you can type in the name of a file and the computer will search and tell you where it is located |
| folders | these help keep files stored inside a computer organized |
| directories | also known as folders- they keep files organized by grouping them together |
| desktop | the screen you see when you turnon your computer. the background for all programs. contains the commands for accessing the programs. |
| wallpaper | the background graphic of your desktop |
| Control Panel | this gives the user access to the computer system and many support applications, such as "Add new hardware", "Add/Remove Programs" |
| My Computer | icon located on the desktop which accessses drives, printers, the control panel, and other system applications |
| Recycle Bin | icon that allows you to delete a file or folder |
| Taskbar | the long, thin bar along the edge of the screen with a box labeled "Start" on one end and a clock on the other- allows you to access programs and files |
| Quick Launch | icons located on the taskbar that allow one-click access to frequently used programs |
| Favorites | basic Start-Menu option- accesses book-marked web pages |
| Run | basic Start-Menu option- user can input commands to run specific programs |
| windows | many programs and applications run within these. they can be opened, minimized, resized, and closed |
| Scroll Bar | this is located on the right side of a window when the window contains more information than can fit on one screen. moving it up and down allows you to see it all |
| Minimum System Requirements | your system needs to have at least this much speed, memory, space, etc. to run the software properly |
| System Recommendations | programs will run on a system with the minimum requirements, but will run better at this in order to get optimum software performance |
