Navigation Acts | Laws that governed trade between England and its colonies. Colonists were required to ship certain products (e.g., tobacco, wood, sugar) exclusively to England. All shipping had to be done on English ships or on ships made in the colonies. Imports from European countries to the colonies had to pass through English ports. These laws made colonists angry because they were forbidden from trading with other countries. |

Stono Rebellion | 1739 slave uprising near Charles Town, South Carolina. During the rebellion, slaves killed approximately 20 whites and burned plantations. As they tried to escape, man yof the slaves were wiped out by a white militia. In response, South Carolina enacted new laws and restrictions called slave codes. Under the slave codes, slaves must be under constant surveillance; Masters could be fined for not disciplining slaves; and legislative approval required for manumission. |
