Body Planes Imaginary lines drawn through the body at various parts to seperate the body into sections.
Transverse Plane Horizontal plane dividing the body into upper and lower portions.
Superior Body parts above other parts.
Inferior Body parts below another part.
Cranial Body parts located near the head.
Caudal Body parts located near the sacral region of the spinal column.
Midsagittal, Median, Or Plane The plane dividing the body into equal right and left halves.
Medial Toward the midline of the body.
Lateral Body parts away from the midline.
Frontal, Coronal, Or Plane Divides body into front and back section.
Ventral Or Anterior Body parts on the front of the body
Dorsal Or Posterior Body parts on the back of the body
Proximal Closer to the point of attachment
Distal Farthest away from the point of attachment
Body Cavities Spaces within the body that contain vital organs.
Dorsal Cavity Contains the cranial cavity and spinal column
Cranial Cavity Contains the brain
Spinal Cavity Contains the spinal cord
Ventral Cavity Contains the structures within the chest and abdomen
Thoracic Cavity Space in the chest containing the heart, lungs, bronchial tubes, trachea, esophagus, and other organs
Abdominal Cavity Space below the chest containing organs such as the liver, stomach, gallbladder, and intestines; also called the abdomen
Pelvic Cavity Contains the urinary bladder, the reproductive organs, and the last part of the large intestine.
Orbital Cavity Contains the eyes
Nasal Cavity Space within the nose
Buccal Cavity Mouth (for teeth and tongue)
Abdominal Regions Right upper quadrant, left upper quadrant, left lower quadrant, and right lower quadrant
Epigastric Above the stomach
Umbilical Near the belly button
Hypogastric Below the stomach
Hypochondriac Below the ribs
Lumnar Near the large bones of the spinal cord
Inguinal Near the groin
