acculturation all the knowledge and values shared by a society
assimilation the social process of absorbing one cultural group into harmony with another
artifact an object made by human beings; often refers to a primitive tool or other relic from an earlier period
built environment The man-made surroundings that provide the setting for human activity, ranging in scale from personal shelter to neighborhoods to the large-scale civic surroundings.
commodification The process through which something is given monetary value; occurs when a good or idea that previously was not regarded as an object to be bought and sold is turned into something that has a particular price and that can be traded in a market economy.
core-domain-sphere model The place where concentration of culture traits that characterizes a region is greatest.
cultural convergence The tendency for cultures to become more alike as they increasingly share technology and organizational structures in a modern world united by improved transportation and communication.
cultural determinism Cultural determinism is the belief that the culture in which we are raised determines who we are at emotional and behavioral levels. This supports the theory that environmental influences dominate who we are instead of biologically inherited traits.
