Berlin Decree Forbade English ships from entering French ports and placed England under a blockade.
Continental System Napoleon's attempt to economically strangle England by stopping trade ad closing European ports to English. Berlin and Milan Decress were part of it.
Orders-in-council Laws issued by England as response to Berlin Decree. Forbade neutral trade with French ports and placed blockade on all other ports in French empire.
Milan Decree Issued by France and stated that any ship that had visited England was bound for English port, or searched by English party could be confiscated by France.
Chesapeake-Leopard Affair Four men taken from American ship Chesapeake after fired upon by English ship Leopard. Caused great public resentment among Americans and almost started war with England.
Embargo Act Attempted to retaliate against English impressment by prohibiting U.S. trade with foreign nations. Devestated New England colonies becasue their trade stopped and ships rotted.
Non-intercourse Act Reopened trade with all foreign nations except France and England.
Erskine Agreement Withdrew Endland's Orders-in-Council if U.S. would trade only with Enland. Rejected by English Parliament.
Macon's Bill #2 LIfted all restrictions on trade and promised France and England that if either nation would lift their trade restrictions, U.S. would trade only with that nation.
Cadore Letter Sent by Napoleon to U.S. and promised to repeal France's restrictions if England repealed Orders-n-Council. Gesture of France's good will.
Warhawks Led by Henry Clay, westerners who demanded immediate war with England.
Tecumseh Indian chief who organized Northwest Indians and attempted to end land sales to U.S. gov't w/o consent of all tribes.
Battle of Tippecanoe Indecisive battle between Indians and U.S. troops. William H. Harrison bought land from fragment of tribe and attempted to occupy it.
Oliver H. Perry Gained control of Lake Erie and allowed the U.S. to invade Canada in 1813.
Thomas MacDonough Defeated British squadron at Lake Champlain and stopped the English invasion of NY.
Constitution U.S. shpi that sailed the seas after English placed a blockade off American coast in 1813.
Washington D.C. English forces took over after Battle of Bladensburg. Burned gov't buildings along w/ presidential mansion.
Francis S. Key Composed "Star Spangled Banner" after witnessing English attack on Fort McHenry.
Hartford Convention Reps. from New England states(Feds) met to voice opposion to war w/ England. Feds also proposed to limit power of Congress to make war, admit new states, and impose embargoes.
Treaty of Ghent Treaty between U.S. and England and ended War of 1812. Provided mutual restoration of all conquests and made no mention of maritime laws or other issues for which the U.S. went to war.
Andrew Jackson Met army of 10,000 English troops at New Orleans in 1815 and lost 13 men while ENglish lost 2,000. News of Treaty of Ghent, ending War of 1812, did not reach Jackson until after battl.e Victory at New Orleans made him military hero and helped him become president.
