| What is the destruction of the Temple in terms of Influencing the writing of MT's gospel | The disciples ask Jesus, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?" When the disciples asked, "When will these things be?" it was with reference to the destruction of the temple. The destruction of the temple occurred in A.D. 70 when Rome, led by Titus, destroyed Jerusalem. The temple was burned. The things made of gold that resided in the temple melted as the temple burned and the gold ran down into the cracks between the stones. Every stone was toppled from its place as people searched for the gold. The destruction of Jerusalem is referenced in Matthew 24:15-22 and more clearly spoken of in Luke 21:20-24 as Christ taught that those in Jerusalem should flee for their lives. This first destruction of Jerusalem is a foreshadowing of what is in store for Jerusalem. It also should be noted that there will be a double fulfillment of the destruction of Jerusalem. While Titus did destroy the city in A.D. 70, he did not fulfill all that Christ spoke in the Olivet |
| MT paints similarities btwn Moses and Jesus | Matthew makes Jesus a type of Moses in several key places: in the birth and infancy narrative, the temptation, the Sermon on the Mount, the transfiguration and the appointment of a successor. The author creates a story which parallels that of Moses. For example, in the infancy stories Jesus evades the life-threatening harassment of an insecure tyrant--a ruler who wishes to eradicate potential male leadership; and God eventually brings him safely out of Egypt. For example, in Matthew Jesus delivers the Q sermon from a mountain, while Luke refers to a level place. the author of Matthew wishes to make sure that Christianity, and Jesus, can never be dissociated from Judaism |

| Jesus 'connection to Judism | Matthew makes Jesus a type of Moses in several key places: in the birth and infancy narrative, the temptation, the Sermon on the Mount, the transfiguration and the appointment of a successor.
| MT and the old testament thoughts included in his gospels | Another rather striking characteristic of the Gospel of Matthew is its high regard for the teachings of the Old Testament. There are approximately fifteen instances in which Matthew interprets some event in the life of Jesus as a fulfillment of a prophecy in the Old Testament. Evidently the author of Matthew did not think of Christianity as something that involved a definite break with the Jewish religion. Instead, he considered Christianity as a continuation and fulfillment of that which had been set forth in the literature of the Old Testament. Not for a moment did he think that Jesus changed or set aside the requirements of the Mosaic Law. Rather, Matthew supplements and interprets the requirements in a manner that accords with their original purpose. In his zeal to show a close relationship between Jesus and the Old Testament, Matthew appears at times to make references to incidents in the life of Jesus for no other reason than to document them as fulfilling Old Testament prophecy. |
| Infant narratives by MT | Matthew begins with a genealogy of Jesus that traces his ancestry as far back as Abraham. The ancestry is traced on the side of Joseph, although the author later definitively states that Joseph was not Jesus' father. Following the genealogy is an account of the wise men's visit to Jesus' birth site, Herod's attempt to destroy the newborn child, and the flight into Egypt for the child's protection. After the death of Herod, the family returned and settled in the Galilee town of Nazareth, which, according to Matthew, fulfilled another Old Testament prophecy. |
| Main difference between MK and MT | While the author of the Gospel of Mark seems to have been impressed most of all with the wonderful deeds that Jesus performed, Matthew places the major emphasis on the marvelous things that Jesus taught. |
