purpose of circulatory system?
-move materials around the body
-delivers food and oxygen to cells
-carries waste away from cells
parts of the circulatory system?
heart, blood, blood vessels
What does plasma do?
part of blood that carries food to the cells and carries waste away from the cells. Gives water to cells and can move chemicals around your body too. Blood is 1/2 plasma.
What do cells need to get energy from food?
oxygen...which they get from RED blood cells
-little less than half of blood is red blood cells
How can you tell if a blood cell is carrying oxygen or not?
Red = oxygen
Darker red = no oxygen
Why are white blood cells important?
-protect your body against germs and harmful things
-can attack or make chemicals to fight off germs
What happens to white blood cells when you are sick?
Your body makes more of them to fight the infection.
What are platelets?
pieces of cells in the blood that clump together when you get a cut so the bleeding stops.
What are the shapes of the different kinds of blood cells?
red=discs with dimple in the middle
white=vary in shape and size...larger than red
What are the three kinds of blood vessels?
arteries, capillaries and veins
List some characteristics of arteries?
-carry blood AWAY from the heart
-thick, muscular walls
-carry blood with lots of oxygen
List some characteristics of capillaries?
-smallest blood vessels
-walls are only one cell thick so Carbon dioxide and wastes can enter the blood
List some characteristics of veins?
-blood vessels that take blood BACK to the heart
-have VALVES that keep blood flowing the right way
what keeps the blood flowing the right direction in your body?
Your heart's pumping.
What are the parts of the heart?
atriums are upper parts
ventricles are lower parts (bigger and more powerful)
