Terms	Definitions
Stomata	The silt-like openings or pores in the epidermis of the leaf.
Cuticle	a waxy layer that covers the epidermis of some leaves and reduces water loss.
Phloem	Tube-like tissue that acts to transport food made in the leaves to other parts of the plant.
Chloroplast	Part of a plant cell that contain chlorophyll.
Veins	Bundles of xylem and phloem that run through leaves.
Xylem	Tube-like tissue in some plants that transport water and nutrients up from the roots to the stems and leaves.
Evergreen Tree	A tree that loses its leaves gradually, it never is completely without leaves; a conifer.
Deciduous Tree	A tree that loses all of it s leaves at the end of each growing season.
Photosynthesis	The process in which plants use carbon dioxide and water along with light energy to produce food and oxygen.
Chlorophyll	Causes the plant to appear green, it absorbs light to provide the energy for photosynhesis.
Epidermis	the surface layer of the leaf that protects the inner parts of the leaf.
Guard Cells	Cells that surround a stoma and control its size.
