Exponential growth | Growth of a population in an ideal, unlimited environment, represented by a J-shaped curve when population size is plotted over time. |
Abundance | An expression of the total number of organisms in a biological community. |
Biodiversity | Total variety of living organisms in an area or on earth as a whole. |
carrying capacity | Largest number of individuals of a population that a environment can support |
closed population | Only natality and mortality affect an organism's population size - not migration. |
Community | (ecology) a group of interdependent organisms inhabiting the same region and interacting with each other |
Density dependent | Referring to any characteristic that varies according to an increase in population density. |
Density independent | Referring to any characteristic that is not affected by population density eg. weather events |
K-selected species | Species that produce a few, often fairly large offspring but invest a great deal of time and energy to ensure that most of those offspring reach reproductive age. Compare r-selected species. |
r-selected species | Species that reproduce early in their life span and produce large numbers of usually small and short-lived offspring in a short period. |
Logisitic growth | A model describing population growth that levels off as population size approaches carrying capacity - flattened S-shaped curve. |
Mark-Recapture | Capturing and marking or tagging organisms, then recapturing them and counting how many are marked to estimate population size. |
Immigration | migration into a place (especially migration to a country of which you are not a native in order to settle there) |
species richness | the number of species in a biological community. |
Transects | Line through an area. regular intervals along line using quadrat. Used where enviroment changes gradually |
quadrats | Marking off a small area + counting the species (for finding pop. density) for plants and other non-motile organisms especially. |
