Geometric Shapes Shapes that can be described and measured in mathematical terms
Two-Dimensional Shapes Shapes that are flat and can be measured using height and width. Include squares, rectangles, triangles, circles, ovals, and rectangles.
Free-Form Shapes Organic shapes, often found in nature, that are irregular or uneven, with outlines that are curved, angular, or both.
Silhouette The shape of a shadow.
Pattern Repeating lines, shapes, and colors that create a feeling of movement.
Motif The unit of repetition in a pattern or visual rhythm; the thing that is being repeated.
Random pattern Motifs appear in no apparent order, with irregular spaces in beween.
Regular pattern Identical motifs and equal amounts of space in between
Alternating pattern Uses motifs that are changed in some way or use more than one motif.
Rhythm A feeling of movement created by usingthe same types of lines, shapes, or colors several times in a work of art
Visual Rhythm A rhythm in art that is visible and is created by repetition. It has a beat, just like in music.
Visual Movement A sense of movement created by visual rhythm.
Nonobjective painting A painting that contains no recognizeable subject matter.
Flowing Rhythm Visual Rhythm created by reapeating curved lines or shapes
Curved lines Rounded, flowing lines
