Creation and the Question of Gender
|Gender Question||Male and Female he created them|
Man and woman are equally important and equally valuable to God
Does equility mean equal in status(being)? in function (role)?
Did man and woman have different roles before the fall? Does "New Creation" take away gender differences?
Does the fact that man was created first give him any prerogative--like first born rights?
|Does redemption in Christ remove or support gender inequality in marriage|| when the bible says the woman was created to be his helper or helpmate what does it mean or imply?|
|The essential nature of mankind||Is human nature body and soul? or body soul and spirit?|
|Three views of the essential Nature|| Trichotomy --body soul spirit|
Dichotomy -- body and soul/spirit
Monism -- mankind is one element of a person; the body is the person and sould cannot exist without the body
|Bible Says|| -Soul and spirit are interchangeable--"my soul glorifies the lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior"|
-The soul departs from the spirit at death "the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it"
|Dichotomy|| body and soul|
body and spirit
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body...rather be afraid of the who who can destroy both the soul and body...
|Trichotomy||May god himself...sanctify you through and through. May your whol spirit soul and body be kept blameless.|
|3 Views on the origin of the spirit/soul|| 1) Creationism|
|Creationism|| -Each soul is created by God at a time uncertain to us|
-God created it perhaps between conception and delivery of a baby
-The 'pure' soul becomes sinful even before birth when it enters the body and born into a sinful world
|Traducianism|| -The soul is transmitted to children by their parents at the time of conception|
-This explains the doctrine of inherited sins from parents
|Pre-existentianism|| -The soul existed before conception|
-God brings the pre-existing soul to be joined to the body at conception
|The Doctrine of Sin||How would you describe sin? what acts are associated with sin?|
|What is Sin|| Sin is a specific kind of evil-evil DNE sin|
Sin is the lack of conformity to or breaking the law of God
Any failure to conform to the moral law of God in act, attitude or nature
Sin presumes guilt, pollution/corruption and resides in human hearts/minds
|The origin of sin|| Christians and jews trace it to the temptation and fall in Gen 3|
Sin affected the restricted image of God--knowledge of God, righteousness and holiness--reformers/calvinist see this as the cause of 'total depravity of mankind'
|The Doctrine of Inherited Sin|| adams race inherits adams sin|
inherited sinful nature or corruption
totally lack spiritual god before god
unable to do spiritual good before God
|What is difference between original and actual sin?|| Actual refers to sins exhibited in outward acts, conscious thoughts and volitions--eg pride envy hatred sensual lusts theft murder etc. |
