Axis
an imaginary line that passes through Earth's center and the north and south poles, about which Earth rotates
Rotation
the spinning motion of a planet on its axis
Revolution the movement of an object around another object
Orbit The path of an object as it revolves around another object in space.
Perihelion
The point in a planet's orbit at which the planet is closest to the sun.
Aphelion
the point in a planet's orbit that is farthest from the sun
Zenith The point in which the sun is directly overhead.
Solstice The two days of the year on which the sun reaches its greatest distance north or south of the equator; June 21 and Decemeber 21
Equinox the two days of the year on which neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the sun
Phases
one of the different apparent shapes of the moon as seen from Earth
Crescent the shape of the moon when less than half full
Gibbous the moon phase in which we see more than half, but not all, of the moon's sunlit side
Waxing (of the moon) pertaining to the period during which the visible surface of the moon increases
Waning (of the moon) pertaining to the period during which the visible surface of the moon decreases
Solar Eclipse
the blocking of sunlight to earth that occurs when the moon is directly between the sun and earth
Lunar Eclipse
the blocking of sunlight to the moon that occurs when Earth is directly between the sun and the moon
Umbra the darkest part of a shadow
Penumbra the part of a shadow surrounding the darkest part
Tides the daily rise and fall of Earth's waters on its coastlines
Spring Tide
a tide with the greatest difference between high an low tide that occurs when the sun and the moon are aligned in a line with Earth
Neap Tide
a tide with the least difference between high and low tide that occurs when the sun and moon pull at right angles to each other
Maria
dark, flat areas on the moon's surface formed from huge ancient lava flows
Highlands tall mountain ranges and appear as light areas on the moon
Craters
A large round pit caused by the impact of a meteoroid.
