subordinate clause contains a subject and predicate but cannot stand alone; must be used with a main clause; begins with a subordinating conjunction
simple sentence contains one main clause and no subordinate clauses
compound sentence contains two or more main clauses that are ussually joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction
complex sentence contains one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses
compound-complex sentence contains more than one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses

exclamatory sentence shows emotion, ends with and exclamation point (!)
