Definitions

Continental Drift The earliest theory that states that the continents are moving apart into different locations on the earth.
Continental Drift Alfred Wegener developed this theory.
Sea Floor spreading is the process in which the ocean floor is extended (expands) when two plates move apart.
Plate Bounaries Divergent, convergent, and transform are all examples of this.
Divergent Boundary Plates that move in different direction and pull apart.
Convergent Boundary Plates that crash and come together.
Transform Boundary Plates that slip and slide past one another.
Plate Tectonics This theory explains how landforms are made such as: islands, mountains, valleys, etc.
Earthquake The trembling and/ or shaking of the ground.
Volcano An opening or crack in the earth's surface through which lava flows.
Plate Tectonics States that the earth is broken into plates which float over the asthenosphere.
Tremors Small earthquakes.
Focus point The point underground where the earthquake starts.
Epicenter The point directly above the focus. This point is above the ground.
Seismograph The instrument that measures the strength of the earthquake.
Richter scale A scale used to measure the magnitude of an earthquake.
Lava Magma that reaches the earth's surface.
Magma Hot melted rock deep inside the earth.
Active volcanoes Volcanoes that still erupt.
Dormant volcanoes Volcanoes that are said to be asleep, but still have the possibility of erupting.
Extinct volcanoes Volcanoes that will never erupt again.
Ring of fire The circle of volcanoes the circle the pacific plate.
Composite Volcanoes Volcanoes formed by alternating layers of lava and rock fragments.
Cinder cone Volcanoes Volcanoes which have a bowl shped crates at the summit.
Shield Volcanoes Volcanoes that have broad, sloping sides and are built from lava.
Lava dome Volcnaoes Volacnoes built by slow eruptions and sometimes formed within a crater.
