What was the Ancient order of Hiberians?

They were a catholic men's organization. Their purpose was to aid recent Irish immigrants to America.

Who were the Molly Maguires?

They were a group within the AOH who lashed out against coal miners.

What was a city machine?

A political organization that controlled a cities government by providing services to those who are less fortunate(immigrants). Most where democratic and corrupt. EX: Tammany hall- New York's City machine

What was a nativist?

Someone against immigrants.

What was the Order of the Star Spangled Banner?

A secret Nativist group. Their nick name was the "know nothings"

What is a Pluralistic Society?

A society which is unified,but very cultural.

What is subsistence farming?

To grow enough food just for you and your family.

What are cash crops?

They are mass growings of food that are grown to be sold for profit.

What was the industrial revolution and what leads up to it?

The begining of industry. You have to have an agricultural revolution first to support population, then you have to have a decent transportation system.

What was the factory system?

It brought together mass groups of people to make products.

Who was the father of the factor system?

Samuel Slater.

What was the cottage industry?

Where people made products in their own homes (often clothing)

Who was Eli Whitney

He created the cotton gin- which made harvesting cotton easier, and interchangeable parts. (1793)

What are interchangeable parts?

Its a systems of sizes, and standardization.

What was King cotton?

A phrase given to the south because of its importance in the cotton industry.

Who was Elias Howe?

He introduced the sowing machine in 1845.

What was the Principle of Limited Liability?

The legal responsibility of the share holders is limited to what ever you paid for it. If something bad happens you are not responsible.

Who where the "Scabs"?

They were a term given to the people who take over the jobs of strikers.

What was the cult of Domesticity?

It was the idea that women are special. Their special place is at home.

What was Lowell Mass. and what was a lowell mill

A town where immagrant women(Lowell girls) were sent to work in factorys called lowell mills. They were very strict.

What was a National Economy?

When people bought and sold goods from far distances.

What was "A rising tide lifts all boats"?

A saying that was used to justify social inequality. As the economy improves, eventually everyone will benefit.

What was Common wealth vs. Hunt?

had the outcome in March 1842, ruled that unions were legal organizations and had the right to organize a strike.

Who was John Deere and what did he do?

He lived in Illinois, in 1847 he produced a steel plow that broke the stubborn sole. They were light enough to be pulled by horse instead of oxen.

Who was Cyrus McCormick

He created the "reaper" in 1831. The reaper was best suited to the fields of the mid west.

What was a turnpike?

A privately funded toll-based public road constructed in the early nineteenth century to facilitate commerce.

Who was Robert Fulton?

He was an engineer. He installed powerful steam engines into vessels that became known as Clermont. They became more popular than the turnpike.

What was the Erie Canal?

New Yorkers that were cut off from federal aid dug the canal. It linked the great lakes and the Hudson river. It was given support by the Governor, Dewitt Clinton. Had a tremendous positive economical effect on the entire northwest and mid-west states.

Who was Cyrus Field?

In 1858, he organized a great Joint Anglo- American - Canadian venture to stretch a cable under the North Atlantic waters from New Foundland to Ireland.

What where clipper ships?

They were small, swift vessels that gave American shippers an advantage in carrying trade.

Who was Samuel F.B. Morse?

He was the inventor of the telegraph.and co inventor of Morse code.

Why was the North more industrial than the south?

The north's soil was to rocky to be farmed. Since they had a dense population, it provided for labor and accessible markets. Shipping brought in capital. Vast river ways also made it easier to get around, and they had water power
