| Alliteration | Repetition of initial sounds in neighboring words is called alliteration. An example of alliteration: The Silly Snake Slithered South for the Summer. |
| Symbol | A symbol is an object or action that means something more than its literal/obvious meaning. For example: The swoosh symbol means Nike. Water is sometimes the symbol of birth and life. |
| Tone | The attitude the writer takes toward a subject. |
| Mood | The emotional attitude another takes toward a subject. |
| Onomatopoeia | Words that imitate the sounds it represents. Examples: Splash, bam, boom, clang, hiss, quack. |
| Metaphor | A comparison of 2 unlike things. Note: It does NOT use like or as. Examples: 1) He is a pig. 2) She is a ray of sunshine. |
