rhyme

the repetition of the same stressed vowel sound and any sounds that follow.
ex. phone and loan

assonance

the repetition of similar vowel sounds
ex. lives and this

consonance

the repetition of consonant sounds
ex. sitting and waiting

alliteration

repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words
ex. "s" sound of steel on stones

rhythm

a musical quality of a pattern of beats created by the arrangement of stressed and unstressed syllables

meter

a regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables
ex. I set her on my pacing steed.

free verse poems

poetry that has no fixed pattern of meter, rhyme, line, length, or stanza. They sound like everyday conversation.

onomatopoeia

the use of words that sound like their meanings.
ex. meow, hiss, gurgle

simile

comparison of two unlike things using "like" or "as"
ex. The many-colored fish is like a rainbow.

metaphor

compares two unlike things
ex. The fish is a rainbow.

personification

a type of metaphor in which an object, animal, or idea is talked about as if it were human.
ex. The fish smiles happily.
