| Term | Definition |
| ratio | Comparing two quantities by division. |
| rate | A ratio of two quantities measured in different units. |
| unit rate | A rate with a denominator of 1. |
| conversion factor | A ratio of equal quantities used to change one unit of measure to another |
| proportion | An equation starting that two ratios are equivalent. |
| cross product | method used to solve proportions and test if two ratios are equal |
| similar figures | Two figures that have the same shape, but not necessarily the same size; The sides of the corresponding sides are proportional or all the angles are equal. |
| congruent angles | Angles that have the same measure |
| scale factor | The ratio of dimensions of the new image to those of the original figure |
| indirect measurement | Uses proportions in similiar triangles to measure the distances that would be difficult to measure directly. (5ft. tall person standing near a tree has a shadow of 4 ft. long, the tree has a shadow 10 ft. long, you use this to find the height of the tree which is 12.5 ft.) |
| scale drawing | A diagram of an object in which the dimensions are in proprtion to the actual dimensions of the object. |
| scale | gives the ratio of the dimensions in the drawing or model to the dimensions of the object |
| scale model | A model of an object in which the dimensions are in proportion to the actual dimensions of the object. |
| reduction | Making a new image that is proportionally smaller than the original figure |
| enlargement | Making a new image that is proportionally larger than the original figure |
| equivalent ratios | ratios that can be converted to equivalent fractions |
