Sophocles author of Oedipus
Dionysia festival where Sophocles showed his plays. Held in honor of Dionysus.
Three Ways Sophocles IMPROVED theatre discussion ? Special effects: mechane and deus ex machina
stand alone plays: before, plays were trilogies, sophocles made it stand alone
dialogue:had 3 people speaking instead of 2
mechane crane that lowers actors playing gods on stage
deus ex machina "god from the machine" an ending for a play in which a god appears and resolves conflict, usually not able to be done w/o god
what was the Sphynx's riddle and the answer? "What has 4 legs in the morning, 2 legs in the afternoon, and 3 legs in the evening?"
Answer: Man
Tragedy discussion ? recounts an important series of events in the life of a protagonist of high birth of noble status. These events result in a catastrophe which causes the protagonist's downfall.
How is Oedipus a tragedy? 1) Catastrophe: Sleeping with his mother and killing his father
2) Downfall: Going from King to a blind beggar
3) Series of Events: Oath to catch the killer, his knowledge of who the killer is, and the investigation to find the killer, leading up to find out he killed his father.
Tragic hero the tragedy's hero who is ennobled [made to look better, redeemed himself at the plays end by accepting his fate and taking responsibility for his actions
How is Oedipus a tragic hero? discussion ?[Out of definition context]
Fate: acknowledges fate in his life; he tried to avoid it by running away from Cornith

Responsibility for his actions:
Words:
1) "It was my own hand that struck me" - admitted he is the killer
Actions and punishments:
1) Wants to punish himself[suicide is too easy, has to gouge his eyes out]
2) Wants to punish himself by banishing himself from the kingdom and giving up his throne
Dramatic irony Contrast between what the character thinks and what the character thinks and what the audience knows
Dramatic Irony examples 1) Swearing to banish Laius' killer.
Thinks: swearing randomly
Audience knows: swearing himself
2)"I fight in his[Laius] defense as for my father."
Thinks: If it was his own Dad
Audience knows: Laius IS his Dad
What have we learned a/b violence in Greek theatre? It always occurs offstage... b/c:
1) Its hard to show it
2) Death and violence is your own private suffering
What does the play teach us a/b fate? You cant outwit fate, no matter what
Ex:
1) Oedipus runs away from Cornith b/c he hears his fate
2) Laius tried to kill his son because he heard his fate
What did Greeks believe a/b knowledge and sight? Any person only has physical or mental sight, NEVER BOTH!
How do the characters in the play illustrate the knowledge and sight beliefs? 1) Tiresias is a blind seer. He sees in his head, not his eyes
2) Oedipus sees through his eyes in most of the story, and he has no clue he killed Laius. Once he finds out, he gouges out his eyes, giving him the mental sight.
How does Oedipus deny his guilt? [in part 1]1) "the police profile": Said there was a group od people, it was a planned assiasination, probably for political use.
2) The surviving servant's testimony: he said there was a group who attack them, but it was really one person.
3) Oedipus's statement a/b Tiresas and the Sphynx: He thought Tiresias wasn't a seer at all because he didn't answer the Sphynx's question.
How does Oedipus deny his guilt? [in part 2] He was told when he was a baby he was with a servant and he thought that the servant was his father.
What does Jocasta say that makes Oedipus doubt his innocence w/ Laius' death? She said don't worry about prophets. She was told a prophet before that her son would kill her husband and marry her. She explained what happened with Laius' death; how it was at a crossroads and what he looked like.
When/how does Oedipus realize that Laius and Jocasta are his parents? Oedipus realizes who his parents are when the servant who took him to the mountains (previously identified as "Laius' man" but now "Herdsman") gets upset when he learns that Oedipus is the baby he he left on the mountain. He doesn't want to talk, so Oedipus can tell what the connection is.
Why does Oedipus blind himself? Oedipus blinds himself for 2 reasons: 1st, he doesn't want to face all the people he hurt (mom, dad, kids, subjects). 2nd, he feels he needs to be punished severely, and blinding will do just that.
