|---|---|
Growth Factors | factors that affect the size of the population |
Limiting Factors | factors that limit the size of the population |
Life History | the reproductive pattern of the population (a growth factor) |
Birth/Death Rate | the amount of births/deaths in a certain time period |
Natality | # of births per year |
Mortality | # of deaths per year |
Immigration | # of organisms moving in |
Emigration | # of organisms moving out |
Zero Population Growth | Births + immigration = deaths + emigration |
Population Increase | more births or immigration |
Population Decrease | more deaths or emigration |
Open Population | Most natural ecosystems, a population in which change in number and density is determined by natality, mortality, immigration, and emigration |
Closed Population | Ex: world polulation, lab, game reserve, zoo. Only births and deaths will affect population size |
Density Dependent Factors | increasing effects as the population increases. Ex: disease, competition, parasites, food, shelter, water, space, etc... (is a limiting factor) |
Density Independent Factors | affects the population regardless of size. Ex: temperature, storms, droughts, floods, fires, etc... (is a limiting factor) |
Competition | Organisms compete for space, food, water, and shelter primarly |
Population Crowding | When crowded, organisms may exhibit more aggression, decrease their parental care, have decreased fertility and decreased resistance to disease |
Carrying Capacity | is the number of organisms of one species that an ecosystem can support |
