Cell A membrane bound structure that is the basic unit of life
Cell Membrane lipid bilayer that separates cell from surrounding environment (selectively permeable)
Cell Theory All living things are made of cells, cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things and all cells arise from preexisting cells
Cell wall A rigid structure that surrounds the cells of plants, made up of cellulose (provides protection and structure by preventing expansion) ONLY in plant cells
Chloroplast A plastid containing chlorophyll, the site of photosynthesis (Found ONLY in plant cells)
Cytoplasm Watery Material between the cell membrane and the nucleus that suspends organelles and is the site of chemical reactions (Supported by cytoskeleton)
Cytoskeleton AA network of fibers extending through the cytoplasm, gives mechanical support, maintains shape and allows for movement
Eukaryote A cell that contains a nucleus, has a MEMBRANE and several organelles
Golgi apparatus Processes, packages and stores cell products to be secreted. (Is stacks of membranes forming flattened sacs)
Lysosomes Sac of digestive enzymes to digest organic molecules, worn-out cell structures and bacteria. (Most numerous in disease fighting cells like WBC's)
Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell, organelle that is the site of cellular respiration (glucose and oxygen is converted to ATP) Has Cristae (inner foldings) and own DNA
Nuclear envelope Membrane that surrounds the nucleus (has pores)
Nucleolus Site of ribosome synthesis, located inside the nucleus
Nucleus Contains the DNA (on chromosomes)
Organelle Specialized parts of the cell which carry out specific life functions ("little organs"
Organs Several types of body tissues that together form a function
Organ System A group of organs that interact to perform a set of related tasks
Prokaryote A cell that lacks a nucleus and membrane bound organelles (1/10 the size of Eukaryotes)
Ribosome Site of protein synthesis, some found in cytoplasm and some attached to ROUGH E.R
Tissue A group of similar cells that carry out a function
Vacuole A fluid filled organelle that stores food (Plant cells have one large central one for water and nutrient storage)
Centriole A bundle of microtubules that is involved in cell division (located in pairs near nucleus) Only found in ANIMAL cells
Endoplasmic Reticulum (E.R) Network of channels for carrying substances from one part of the cell to another (usually near the nucleus) Involved in synthesis of lipids, metabolism of carbs and detoxification of drugs and other poisons.
