Charge | The basic ingredient of electricity. Either positive (+) or negative (-) and you cannot make or destroy it. It is already all around is in the atoms from which everything is made. |
Static Electricity | If charge is stationary and/or concentrated then we have static electricity. |
Current Electricity | If charge is flowing then we have current electricity |
Conductors | Materials that allow charged particles to move freely through them e.g. Metals and Carbon in the form of Graphite. |
Insulators | Materials which do not allow charged particles to move through them easily e.g. Plastics, ceramics and glass |
An electrical Earth | Our planet can easily 'absorb' unwanted charge (or electricity) and can be a 'source' of charge if you have a means of attracting the charge off the Earth. |
Electrical discharge through air | When large quantities of positive charge and negative charge have been separated (causing very high voltages to develop) then a sudden discharge through the air (an electrical spark) can occur.e.g. Lightning, Induction coils, the van de Graaf generator and spark plugs |
