Hudson Bay Company | A British run company that had large trading ties with native americans in the pacific northwest. It gave them strong ties to the Oregon Territory. |
Zachary Taylor | A US general in the US-Mexico war in 8147-47. Sometimes called "Rough and Ready. He crossed the Rio Grande River and captured Buena Vista against great odds. |
James K. Polk | President of the US elected in 1844. He peacefully settled the dispute over the Oregon Territory. Won a war over Mexico by 1847 in an attempt to get California, lowered the protective tariff, and created an independant treasury of the US. |
William Henry Harrison | Was originally elected president in 1840. He died 4 weeks latere of pnumonia and the presidency was taken overe by John Tyler. |
John Tyler | Became president when William Henry Harrison died of pnumonia. He peacefully annexed Texas, put in another protective tarriff, and oversaw the resolution of the boundry of Maine with Britain in 1842 |
Santa Anna | The exiled leader of Mexico who agreed with the US that he would return to Mexico City and convince them to peacefully give up their territory. Insted he only encouraged the Mexicans. Eventually signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. |
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo | The treaty that ended the US-Mexico War. Mexico officially relinquished their claims on Texas and gave up the land west of there up to California for $15 million dollers. |
Wilmot Proviso | An amendment put forth in the House that none of the territory gained from Mexico could become a slave state. It never got to Congress, but it was a foreshadowing of the coming Civil War. |
Liberty Party | A former political party in the United States; formed in 1839 to oppose the practice of slavery; merged with the Free Soil Party in 1848 |
Walker Tariff of 1846 | This protective tariff put in place in 1846 lowered the duty from 32% to 25% and helped bring the US out of a Depression. |
