Photosynthesis The process by which a cell captures the energy in sunlight and uses it to make food .
Pigment Colored chemical compound that absorbs light. Give the green color in plant cells.
Chlorophyll The main pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants.
Autotroph An organism that makes its own food.
Stomata Small openings on the undersides of the leaves.
Heterotroph An organism that cannot make its own food.
Cell Cycle The regular sequence of growth and division that cells undergo.
Chromosome Doubled rod of condensed chromatin.
Chromatid Identical rod, or strand, of the chromosome
Cytokinesis Final stage of the cell cycle. It completes the process of cell division.
Interphase The period before cell division occurs. During interphase, the cell grows to its mature size, makes a copy of its DNA, and prepares to divide into two cells.
Replication A process in which the cell makes a copy of the DNA in its nucleus.
Mitosis Stage during which the cell's nucleus divides into two nuclei.
