Prevalence The number of individuals with disease in a population at a specific point in time
Incidence the number of individuals who experience new disease during a specific time period
Trends changes in difference in the prevalence and incidence of disease with respect to time, location, or socioeconomics
Short duration incidence and prevalence are identical
Long duration prevalence is much higher than the incidence

DMF/dmf index the M and F components are historical markers of the presence of past disease. D = active disease. DMF overstates the prevalence of active caries
