acquired immunodeficiency syndrome a syndrome caused by the human immunodeficiency virus HIV, that renders immune cells ineffective, permitting opportunistic infections, malignancies, and neurologic diseases to develop; transmitted sexually or through contaminated blood
human immunodeficiency virus the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
opportunistic infections infections that occur in individuals who do not have healthy immune systems
antibody any of a large variety of proteins normally present in the body or produced in response to an antigen which it neutralizes, thus producing an immune response
gonorrhea a common venereal disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhea
pelvic inflammatory disease inflammation of the female pelvic organs (especially the Fallopian tubes) caused by infection by any of several microorganisms (chiefly gonococci and chlamydia)

trichomoniasis a vaginal infection that can lead to urethra and bladder infections
pubic lice Microscopic parasites that live in the pubic hairs usually referred to as crabs
