Egg | The earliest stage of a life cycle in animals. |
Seed | The earliest stage of a life cycle in plants. |
Larva (singular) or Larvae (plural) | The larva stage follows the egg stage in a life cycle. The larva is the caterpillar stage. Larvae spend almost all of their time eating. |
Pupa | The pupa stage follows the larva stage in a life cycle. The pupa is the chrysalis stage. |
Adult | The most mature stage in a life cycle. More eggs or seeds are created by the adults in a life cycle. |
Nymph | The stage after the egg during incomplete metamorphosis. A nymph is a small version of an adult (with tiny wings), but it cannot mate. |
Complete metamorphosis | Moving from egg to larva to pupa to adult in a life cycle. Butterflies and moths undergo complete metamorphosis) |
Incomplete metamorphosis | Moving from egg to nymph to adult in a life cycle. Grass hoppers undergo incomplete metamorphosis. |
