| fistula | an abnormal passage leading from a suppurating cavity to the body surface |
| rectal polyp | tissue growths that arise from the wall of the rectum and protrude into it. They may be either benign or malignant (cancerous). |
| proctitis | inflammation of the rectum and anus caused by infection, trauma, drugs, etc. Acute or chronic. |
| rectal prolapse | normally describes a medical condition wherein the walls of the rectum protrude through the anus and hence become visible outside the body. |
| benign prostatic hyperplasia | Nonmalignant, non-inflammatory enlargement of the prostate, most common among men older than 50 years (three words) |
| herpes | an infection caused by type 2 herpes simplex virus usually transmitted by sexual contact. Causes painful vesicular eruptions on the skin and mucous membranes of genitalia. |
| prostatitis | inflammation of the prostate gland, usually the result of an infection |
| pruritus ani | a common chronic condition of itching of the skin around the anus. May be caused by infection, dermatitis, hemorrhoids, pinworms, etc. |
| hemorrhoid | a variscosity in the lower rectum or anus caused by congestion on the veins of the hemorrhoidal plexus. Can be internal or external. |
| imperforate anus | any of several congenital developmental malformations of the anorectal portion of the GI tract |
| retroverted uterus | a common condition in which an organ is tipped backward, usually without flexion or other distortion. Uterus may be retroverted in as many as 1 in 4 women. |
| fissure | a cleft or groove on the surface of an organ, often marking its division into parts, such as the lobes of the lung |
| sphincter control | A ring-shaped muscle that encircles an opening or passage in the body. The opening and closing of the anus is controlled by contraction and relaxation of a sphincter, as is the opening that leads to the stomach from the esophagus. |
| chancre | a skin lesion, usually of primary syphilis, that begins at the infection site of a papule 10 to 30 days after exposure to the spirochete and develops into a red, bloodless, painless ulcer w/ a scooped out appearance. |
| gonorrhea | an STD that most often affects the genitourinary tract and occasionally the pharynx or rectum. |
| pilonidal cyst | a cyst that often develops in the sacral region of the skin. May sometimes be recognized at birth by a depression, sometimes a hairy dimple in the midline in the back in the sacrococcygeal area. Do not cause problems usually but fistulas or sinuses may develop. |
