hieroglyphics | An ancient Egyptian writing system in which pictures were used to represent ideas and sounds. |
Rosetta Stone | Stone that contained carved messages in hieroglyphics, Greek and demotic. Led to deciphering of hieroglyphics. |
Phoenicians | Trading civilization that invented most of the letters we still use today. |
Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob | The patriarchs (fathers) of the Jewish faith. |
Israel | Another name for Jacob. The nation that came from his descendants was named after him. |
Moses | The most significant prophet in Judaism. |
monotheistic | Belief in only one God. |
Israelites | Another name for the Hebrews or Jewish people. |
Torah | The name of the Hebrew holy book. |
Saul | The first king of a united Israel. Fought against Samuel the prophet - and lost. |
David | The great warrior-king of ancient Israel. Most famous for his symbol and conquering Jerusalem. |
Solomon | Ancient Israelite king known for wisdom, ruling over a golden age, and building the great temple. |
