a pairing of input values with output values

### function

a relation providing there is exactly one output for each input

### independent variable

the input variable

### dependent variable

the output variable

### linear function

a function that is in the form of y = mx + b

### function notation

naming a function "f" and using the equation f(x) = mx + b

### slope

the ratio of vertical change (the rise) to horizontal change (the run); "rise over run"

### parallel lines

two lines of a page that do not intersect

### perpendicular lines

two lines on a plane that Intersect to form right angles

### y-intercept

where the y-axis is intercepted
To find it, plug in 0 for x and solve for y.

### linear inequality

an inequality that can be written in one of the following forms:

a shaded region which contains the points that are solutions of the inequality, and an unshaded region which contains the points that are not solutions
