allusion a reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art
antagonist a character or force in conflict with the main character
external conflict the struggle between opposing forces, a struggle between a character and an outside force
internal conflict a struggle which takes place in the protagonist's mind and through which the character reaches a new understanding or dynamic change
dialogue conversation between characters
flashback a section of a literary work that interrupts the sequence of events to relate an event from an earlier time
foil a person or thing, that by contrast makes another seem better or more prominent
foreshadowing the use in a literary work of clues that suggest events that have yet to occur
genre a division or type of literature
irony the general name given to literary techniques that involve surprising, interesting, or amusing contradictions
metaphor a figure of speech in which something is descrided as though it were somethign else
mood atmosphere; feeling created in the reader by a literary work or passage
motivation A reason that explains or partially explains why a character thinks, feels, acts, or behaves in a certain way
narrator a speaker or character who tells a story
onomatopoeia is the use of words that imitate sounds
personification a type of figurative language in which a nonhuman subject is given human characteristics
plot the sequence of events in a literary work
point of view is the perspective, or vantage point, from which a story is told
protagonist the main character in a literary work
setting the time and place of the action
suspense a feeling of anxious uncertainty about the outcome of events
symbol is anything that stands for or represents something else
theme is a central mesage, concern, or insight into life expressed in a literary work
simile a figure of speech that expresses a resemblance between things of different kinds (usually formed with 'like' or 'as')
first person told from the narrator's point of view, using "I"
third person limited The narrator is an outsider who sees into the mind of one of the characters.
third person omniscient the narrator is not a character in the story and reports not only what can be seen and heard, but also the thoughts and feelings of all of the important characters
