Disciples of Christ A Protestant church that accepts the Bible as the only source of true Christian faith and practices baptism by immersion. Liberal social issues; wanted other christians to work towards unity. Addison and Randolph Clark-TCU-Coeducational from the start-everyone is involved
Shakers Utopian community that began in the 1740s. Communal spiritual family. Did a lot of dancing. Mother Ann Lee- Lost 2 children and joined with the Shakers. Believed in Abstinence. Lucy Wright. Made furniture-simpicity-elegance-long lasting. Simple gifts is the most famous shaker song.
Joseph Smith Founded Mormonism in New York in 1830 with the guidance of an angel. 1843, Smith's announcement that God sanctioned polygamy split the Mormons and let to an uprising against Mormons in 1844; translated the Book of Mormon and died a martyr.
Brigham Young The successor to the Mormons after the death of Joseph Smith. He was responsible for the survival of the sect and its establishment in Utah, thereby populating the would-be state.
MillennialismSecond coming of Jesus. Millennialism will be 1,000 years of peace on Earth. When is it going to happen? How is it going to happen? Pre-millennialism-1,000 years of peace on Earth will begin with Jesus' arrival. Post-millennialism-Jesus will come after 1,000 years of peace on Earth. Advocates for social reform. Millerites-William Miller-October 22, 1844-says that's when Millennialism will occur-became the Great Disappointment.
