Campbell et al (2000) Method - Swedish study
- compared nursery/childminder kids to kids who couldn't get a place at day care. Therefore two groups have similar circumstances.
- observed playing at home and at nursery, assessed care at home and at nursery, followed them up to fifteen (changing methods to be age appropriate)
Campbell et al (2000) Results - if they had really long days at daycare when they were less than 3 and a half, they were more likely to have social problems.
- high quality daycare before 3 and a half led to better social skills.
- social skills at 3 and a half are set for how they'll be until about fifteen!
Campbell et al (2000) Evaluation + lots of observation, questionnaires etc - all sorts of different measures - made for well rounded findings and more valid conclusions
+ longitudinal study - over a really long period of time; followed them up to see long term effects.
- Not generalisable, small sample size (48 kids) and all Swedish.
EPPE Project (1991) Results - daycare was positive for social skills. Kids who went there got on with others more.
- this was a stronger effect if they'd started day care early
