The fundamental unit of each medical word ROOT
a short word or series of parts added at the end of a root to modify it's meaning SUFFIX
a short word part added before a root to modify it's meaning. PREFIX
an abreviation formed from the first letter of each word in a phrase
ex. ASAP
ACRONYM
a word that contains more than one root compound word
a root word combined with a vowel that links the root with another word part, such as a suffix or another root.
