Mixture | When you combine two or more things together, they will retain their form. |
Property | Is a character of an object, something you can observe such as size, color, shape, or texture. |
Solution | A special mixture formed when a material dissolves in a liquid and cannot be filtered out. |
Dissolve | Is a process in which one material disperses uniformly into another material, so that the first material seems to disappear. Ex. When salt mixes with water, it seems to disappear (Disperses(goes into) the water) and cannot be seen. |
Evaporate | Liquids dry up -- the liquid turns to gas and disperses into the air, leaving any dissolved solid material behind. |
Crystal | Is the solid form of material that can be identified by its properties, such as a shape, color, and pattern. |
Sodium Chloride | A white material that dissolves in water; table salt. |
Diatomaceous Earth | The skeletal remains of diatoms, aquatic organisms with hard shells made of silica. |
Solvent | The liquid in which a solid material (solute) dissolves. |
Solute | Is the material that dissolves in the solvent (liquid). |
Saturated Solution | A solution in which no more material will dissolve; additional material settles to the bottom. |
Solubility | The property that substances have of dissolving in solvents, such as the solubility of salt in water. |
Concentration | Refers to the amount of material dissolved in a measure (volume) of liquid. The more material dissolved in a given amount of liquid, the more concentrated the solution. |
Dilute | To make a solution less concentrated, usually by adding more liquid. |
Volume | The three dimensional space occupied by something, in these investigations it is the amount of liquid. |
