What is the process by which bacteria reproduce called? Binary fission
If a parent cell has 18 chromosomes, how many chromosomes does each daughter cell have at the end of division? 18
What are the two stages of cell division? Mitosis and Cytokinesis
True or false: Bacteria Cells undergo Mitosis. False
What is a centromere? Location where two chromatids attach.
What are chromatids? Duplicated strands of DNA.
What increases at a faster rate when a cell grows: surface area or volume? volume
Why are cells small? So it can exchange material in and out of the cell efficiently and so it is manageable for the DNA.
What happens during the S phase? DNA replication
What phases make up interphase and what happens in each phase? G1- growth S-DNA Replication G2- Prepares for division
What is cytokinesis? Division of the cytoplasm.
How is cytokinesis different in plant cells and animal cells? Plant Cell: Cell plate forms
Animal Cells: Cleavage furrow forms
What is the sequence of the cell cycle? Interphase: G1, S G2 M: Mitosis (prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase) and Cytokinesis
What is mitosis? Division of the nucleus.
What is the result of mitosis? 2 daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell.
What occurs during metaphase? chromosomes line up along the equator.
What happens during anaphase? Sister chromatids split at the centromere and move to the opposite poles.
Name the stages of mitosis in order. Prophase metaphase anaphase telophase
what are stem cells? Cells that have not differentiation. They can become other types of cells.
What determines when a cell will move on to the next stage of the cell cycle? Regulator proteins called cyclins.
What type of regulator proteins are growth factors? External.
How are cancer cells different than normal cells? They divide uncontrollably.
Why does division stop when a cut is healed? When the cells come in contact with other cells they stop dividing.
What is the difference between asexual and sexual reproduction? Sexual- 2 parents, offspring not genetically identical. Asexual- 1 Parent, offspring genetically identical.
