gravity

the attraction between two particles of matter due to their mass

Newton's 1st Law

an object at rest remains at rest and an object in motion maintains its velocity unless it experiences an unbalanced force

velocity

quantity describing both speed and direction

free fall

the motion of a body when only the froce of gravity is acting on it

friction

the force between two objects in contact that opposes the motion of either object

force

the cause of acceleration or change in an object's velocity

acceleration

change in velocity divded by the time interval in which the change occurred

inertia

the tendency of an object to remain at rest or in motion with a constant velocity

momentum

a quantity defined as the product of an object's mass and its velocity

terminal velocity

the maximum velocity reached by a falling object that occurs when the resistance of the medium is equal to the force due to gravity

unbalanced forces

forces acting on an object that combine to produce a net nonzero force

balanced forces

forces acting on an object that combine to produce a net force of zero

law of conservation of momentum

the total amount of momentum in a system is conserved

Newton's 3rd Law

for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction force

weight

the force with which gravity pulls on quantity of matter

Newton's 2nd Law

the unbalanced force acting on an object equals the object's mass times its acceleration

Newton

the SI unit for force
