Marshall PlanThing. America's plan that offered funding to countries in return for abstaining from the Eastern Bloc. 1947.
ComeconThing. The USSR's crappy knock-off of America's funding plan to other countries. 1949.
NATOThing. A treaty between all of the countries that make up the western bloc. 1949.
Warsaw PactThing. A treaty between all of the countries that make up the eastern bloc. 1955.
Berlin Air LiftEvent. The USA supplied West Berlin with supplies for 8 months. June 1948 - May 1949.
Korean WarEvent. A War between North and South Korea in which North Korea attempts to force communism on South Korea. USA steps in and doesn't let it happen. 1950 - 1953.
SputnikThing. The first satellite in space. 1957.
GagarinThing. The first man in space. 1961.
Apollo 11Thing. Flight that took the first man to the man. 1969.
U2Thing. American plane used for spying shot down by USSR. USA could no longer deny spying. 1960.
Berlin WallThing. A Wall put up dividing east and west Berlin. 1961 - 1989.
Cuban Missile CrisisEvent. 13 day stand off when USA finds missiles being sent to cuba. 1962.
Vietnam WarEvent. A War from 1963 - 1973 involving the spread of communism. The USA could not contain in this war, causing it to be a US failure.
DétenteThing. A policy between USSR and USA allowing for a more cooperative approach to their relationship. Included SALT talks. 1972 - 1980.
AfghanistanEvent (although the answer is only the name of the place it occurred in). USSR invades this country. USA does not send troops, but rather economic and military support. 1979.
Star WarsThing. Reagan created satellites to shoot down weapons. Does not work. Violates a treaty. 1983.
HardlinersThing. Traditional communists who saw Gorbachev giving away power that should belong to the party.
ReformersThing. Those who believed that Gorbachev's reforms were good but did not go far enough. Yeltsin fell into this category.
Soviet RepublicsThing. Those who saw the freedoms granted to Eastern Europe and wanted those freedoms for themselves.
