Lily Feet | foot washed in hot water and massaged, then the child's toes were broken and turned under the bottom of the foot, next the arches were broken as the foot was pulled straight with the leg, and a long narrow cotton bandage would be tightly wound around the foot from the toes to the ankle to hold the toes in place. The result was a very deformed foot and the foot actually shrunk as it was in the bandages. Sometimes toes even fell off from loss of blood circulation. The foot was very deformed and unbearably painful to walk on. They did this to children between the ages of 3-11. The thought that it was beautiful to have small feet and that if you wanted a good marriage, then the women had to have small feet. Only wealthy women did this. |
